First animation film released in 1956 launched the long
success of Japanese anime worldwide, and its well-known
character Sailor Moon was born in the studios of TOEI. In 1957
first in Japan widescreen film was produced by TOEI.
The company has produced many animated works(the site is in Japanese) such as Sailor
Moon, Puss in the Boots, Mighty Morphine, Power Rangers, Dragon
Ball, many of which were imported by other countries and
localized. Their characters gained love of children around the globe.
TOEI was also the first to introduce the karaoke(the site is in Japanese)
video to Japan and remains the leader in karaoke clipmaking
industry.
Started from a single cinema theater in 1953 it now controls
the cinema distribution network, that includes more than 150
cinema cheaters all over Japan. TOEI releases around 30 full-length
feature films each year. Among other production is educational
video, production for TV ( TOEI now produces historical dramas,
variety and educational programs that occupy nearly 25 percent
of non-channel TV prime time).
Like most Japanese film companies TOEI has been forced to diversify
and extend activities to film processing services and studio
leasing, real estate, hotel chain(the site is in Japanese) and recreation facilities
development.
The other result of diversification was a division created
in 1983, which main purpose was organization of art exhibitions
from world museums and promotion of foreign countries in Japan.
It was named I.C.E. - International Cultural Exchange.
